Ubuntu

Ubuntu Linux. Debian for the desktop. After hearing a bunch of buzz about Ubuntu on the vanlug list, I decided to download it and try it out today. Initial impression is all positive. It’s Gnome focused, and while I generally prefer KDE, these days almost all the programs I run are GTK based (Firefox, X-Chat, gFTP, GAIM..). The Ubuntu Gnome 2.8 implementation feels tight.
And you just can’t go wrong with their philosophy:
The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customize and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.
I think I’ll be converting my desktop at work and at home!
