Delicious Monster and Delicious Lattes

Zany coincidence. I popped open my bloglines feeds and via the Unofficial Apple Weblog came across a Wired article entitled “Monster Fueled by Caffeine“. It’s about Delicous Monster, the guys behind Delicious Library. They use a cafe as their headquarters! I tried the demo of Delicious Library a few weeks ago and was quite impressed. Very nifty way to manage your collection of books, DVDs, etc. Anyhow, it’s a good story and I just love the idea of running a company out of a coffee shop! As it turns out, Zoka’s barristas also practice “latte art”. Check it:

How weird is it that the first thing I read after posting a photo of latte art is an article that has, well, more latte art! It’s very weird, that’s what! So I made a picture that sums up the differences between Seattle and Vancouver :

:)
Delicious Monster is an inspiring story. I’ve always thought that the best software is made by small, passionate teams. Sometimes just by a single person. A person that wants a piece of software to do something for *them*, and has a passion for seeing it done right. Breaking UNIX into lots of small pieces meant that most of the tools could be written individually. By a person or two. The end result is that 20 years later individuals are still writing new tools that solve new probems. As a whole, the system evolves and improves one tool at a time. If stories like Delicious, Ranchero, and Panic are any indication, the Mac platform may very well be continuing and extending its reputation as a place where small development shops can Make Good Stuff(tm). Which is good for us customers, the shops themselves, and Apple.
On a completely unrelated note, I’ve been unable to post to LJ this evening. Actually, I can’t even open my journal. So it’s likely my LJ friends will never get to experience the glory of a double latte post.
