SpamSieve test drive

I’ve found that since I’ve mostly switched to accessing my vmunix.com email through IMAP (vs. mutt via a shell) I’ve haven’t been updating my SpamAssassin bayesian database. Which means more and more spam has been slipping through.. I’ve been fairly happy with Thunderbird’s spam controls on the PC. I have not, however, found Apple’s builtin Junk Mail filtering to be that great. Which is too bad since I otherwise quite like Mail.

SpamSieve iconEnter SpamSieve. I installed it on Friday after John Gruber named it one of the best apps of 2004. It’s a Bayesian spam filter for OS X that plugs into the most popular email programs on the Mac. Mail, Entourage, MailSmith, Eudora, you name it. Anyhow, the initial test has been going fairly well. Well enough that I turned off SpamAssassin on my vmunix.com address tonight. Open the flood gates! I plan on letting it run as my only spam filter for a few days, and if it continues to work as well as it has over the weekend I have a feeling I’ll be plopping down $50. $25 for Mail at home. $25 for Entourage at work. Or maybe I’ll hold out for an Entourage version of SpamBayes…
