As the saying goes, never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tar tapes. Or, in this case, a wagon full of SCSI disk shelves:
That’s 6TB of disk. Shutdown, unrack, move, reassemble, and power up took 2 hours. So an aggregate throughput of 3TB/hour. Not bad. 
Am I the only one who’s probably moved something like $1M worth of equipment in the back of their car?
March 8th, 2005Heh, the most I have moved was about $50k. Now 3TB/hour that is ultra fast and I bet the transfer cost of extremely cheep. Like $0.0016 per GB if that cost you $10 to move
March 18th, 2005Of course, I’ve never had $1M of gear in my car *all at one time*. We’re gonna have to wait a few year before the equipment condenses that much.
Back in Toronto I had two loaded Sun E450 servers in the back of the Civic once. Or was it one. I can’t remember. This was when they were pretty new boxes. I’m thinking that had to be the most expensive cargo I’ve ever had. Nothing like $250,000 of gear in a $20,000 car.
These days, the most expensive things I carry are probably mountain bikes!
April 26th, 2005I remember moving a small Toronto based ISP 20 blocks or so on a Sunday morning back in ‘98. It was about 20 SGI servers and some disk..
If we had an ups and wifi, maybe we could have kept it up during the move.
