To the Blastwave people: When I do a “pkg-get install vim” you should NOT, by default, go and install all of Gnome 2.8. That’s retarded. Do that if I ask for gvim. But please, let the default vim be X11 free! Thank you.

Try vim-minimal
It is way slimmer and gets the job done.
For the next build of GNOME and vim I will address this issue.

June 10th, 2005This problem illustrates why the “Portage” package management system in Gentoo Linux is so cool. With a single command, portage will download, build and install a package with the build customised according to your own preferences.
Currently the “vim” package can be built with or without the following options: acl bash-completion cscope debug gpm minimal ncurses nls perl python ruby vim-with-x
These options can be specified on a per-package basis or picked up from your system-wide defaults.
Gentoo have already announced plans to add support for OpenSolaris to Portage: http://www.gentoo.org/news/en/gwn/20050124-newsletter.xml?style=printable
