Some nice ZFS related bits
First, Sun released Solaris 10 11/06, which includes updated ZFS code that has RAIDZ2. Frankly, I considered RAIDZ unusable on the systems I use without double-parity support, and now it’s there. Rejoice. Timing on this was great, since I just received our first X4500 (aka “Thumper”) at the GSC. It’s gonna be nice to deploy with RAIDZ2 right from the get go without having to go to OpenSolaris. Not that there’s anything wrong with OpenSolaris, but, hey, if I can get the features I want in standard Solaris that’s even better. Thirdly, it seems that ZFS is gonna be in Mac OS X Leopard afterall. Right on.
It’s neat that we’re hitting the point now where ZFS feels like it’s truly “arrived”. Lots of rough edges are gone, lots of sites have deployed on it, most of feature wish list is done, admin interface feels right.. It’s not easy to bring a new FS to market, and everyone at Sun involved with ZFS really deserves a tip of the hat.
