Great to see someone forging ahead regardless of license issues, Paul. Good luck with the port! I'd certainly love to have the option of running my dtrace tools on Linux.

Dtrace for linux does exist - it just needs some more work done to iron out the bugs and will be available soon.

> Linux and Windows are probably never going to have DTrace
> [...]
> Let’s see DTrace on an EMC Symmetrix or Clarion.. exactly.

Ehr: The EMC² Clarion runs on windows :-p

Well, now we know why Netapp haven't been keen to integrate DTrace - the "don't sue us" clause of its license.

Similar but definitely not the same. DTrace has no effect on your system when it's disabled, kprobes and SystemTap do. DTrace allows probing userland (java, ruby, arbitrary processes) ... kprobes certainly don't, and nor does SystemTap.

Adam Leventhal covers the differences really well in http://blogs.sun.com/ahl/entry/dtrace_knockoffs

One minor point. You say Linux will probably never get DTrace, but Linux does have a similar tool to DTrace with kprobes and SystemTap.

Having never used either, I can't really comment on the betterness or lack thereof, but, FYI.

Thanks,
