The Vim Book - written in DocBook

This project describes the upcoming "Vim Book".

Goal

Audience:
New users of Vim who want to get started with editing with Vim but who do NOT want to read the online docs or the FAQ to get started; they should however know Vi (Ref: OReilly book).

Availability:
The DocBOok source of the book will be available online at http://www.vim.org/book/ - aas well as some other (converted) formats, eg ASCII, HTML, LaTeX, PostScript, DVI, PDF, RTF...

Copyright:
Unsure. There are three kinds of licenses we are considering:

Comments on pro and contra are very welcome!

License: [000411]
The license is a tricky thing. We'd like the source to be publically available so it will be available as a good example and to allow as much feedback as possible. The GPL seems to be widely accepted and has been around for two decades by now, however, the OPL seems to be quite interesting, too. Comments ont his matter are very welcome!

Media:
A book of about 500 pages, including a CD. The CD has a snapshot of the Vim ftp site, the Vim Pages, and sevreal others Vi sources, (eg some docs available online) and, of course, the Vim Book itself in various formats.

ProofReading: These people have volunteered to proof-reading the script:

001108	Massimo Manghi massimo.manghi@libero.it
000410	Hong Feng fred@mail.rons.net.cn
000317	Jay Peter Grayson	grayson.20@osu.edu
000227	Mark Summerfield	summer@perlpress.com
Publisher:
O'Reilly? Prima Publishing? Some "printing on demand" company? Let's see...
Contacts:
	Kim Spilker	KimS@primapub.com
New Riders http://www.newriders.com have released books under both the Open Publication Licence (OPL) and GNU Public Licence (GPL).

Examples: GTK+/Gnome Application Development

Debian GNU/Linux: Guide to Installation and Usage·

Source:
The book will be written in "DocBook", a popular DTD for SGML.

Structure:

Comments and Ideas:
000127: Wouter Verheijen verheije@worldonline.nl: Every chapter should gradually introduce new commands - not all at once. (Yes, that's what ":help" is for. ;-)
