| I currently work for a small company in Cambridge, Ontario. Right now I am doing Unix programming in C, but will be doing some other stuff in the future. Maybe C# and Java. My favourite editor is vim. It's basically vi, just even more powerful. Although people swear that it is hard to learn, I disagree. I found it quite easy to learn and the power of regular expressions and the dual mode feature of the editor is enormous. I highly recommend it to all programmers. My favourite programming languages are C and Perl. I also like to dabble in C++ and have done quite a bit of Java programming. However, Perl is the language that I have been getting warmed up to lately. It's easy to start programming in Perl if you know C and some regular expressions. Perl is incredible for text processing and for getting a program up and running quickly. I got turned onto FreeBSD about 6 years ago and love it. It is an excellent operating system that outdoes Windows95/98 by a mile. If you like tinkering with your OS then give it a try. It is quite easy to install and configuring X Windows isn't all that hard either. There are a lot of good window managers out there for X. Personally, I like ctwm. Here is my .ctwmrc, my .Xdefaults and my rc.xinitrc files if you're interested. Just run the rc.xinitrc through m4 and redirect to .xinitrc. Uncomment your resolution first. Managing the system is a little more work than Windows, but you have to pay for the extra power somehow. It also doesn't drop it's TCP stack or just suddenly die on you unexpectedly. I run my box day and night and rarely reboot. I do recommend a recompile of the kernel especially if you intend to use netscape since the System V IPC is not configured by default. :-( However, recompiling the kernel will let you have a kernel that is going to be faster and smaller. If you are running Windows and miss the features of UNIX then this page, Virtunix, is what you are looking for. They have a whole bunch of UNIX stuff that was ported to Windows. At least you can feel like you are using UNIX when you are in Windows ;-). I am also into Hifi and mountain biking. I don't have a lot of time to go riding like I used to but I try my best. I ride a Kona Unit single speed. It's a fantastic ride. Having only one gear makes you stronger. It also lets you enjoy your rides more. My hifi system isn't the greatest. Too many hobbies to spend on. :) That's about all for now. Check out my links on hifi, mountain bikes, and vi if you're interested. Thanks for visiting my Web Page, and if you actually got this far, well, my hat's off to you. ;-) |
